Job Description and Duties

Under general supervision, conducts thorough inspections of motor carriers to ensure compliance with California Highway Patrol regulations and guidelines. Performs in-depth vehicle inspections to determine safety and operational readiness, and makes recommendations for certification and operating authority. Inspects carrier facilities for compliance with state and federal regulations, and prepares comprehensive written reports of inspections conducted.

Working Conditions

This position requires working in various weather conditions, including heat and rain. The position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code, and the appointee is required to complete Form 700 within 30 days of appointment.

Special Requirements
  • A valid California Driver's License (CDL) is required. The appointee must provide their CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
  • A background investigation and medical clearance are required prior to being hired.
  • A drug screening must be passed prior to being hired.

The California Highway Patrol utilizes its own Motor Carrier Specialist certification list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Motor Carrier Specialist classification to be eligible to take the examination. To obtain certification list eligibility, please view the examination bulletin link at https://www.calhr.ca.gov/ and follow all instructions.
