Breastfeeding Specialist

Job Summary:

The Breastfeeding Specialist is a skilled professional who provides expert care and support to new mothers and their babies. This role involves conducting assessments, developing and implementing individualized breastfeeding plans, and educating patients and their families on breastfeeding self-management.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct thorough assessments of patients referred for breastfeeding consultations and/or teaching.

2. Develop and implement individualized breastfeeding education plans based on patient assessment and medical plan of care.

3. Teach patients and their significant others about breastfeeding self-management and document all aspects of breastfeeding education.

4. Develop and maintain good human relations skills, consistent with the principles of Baystate Health, with patients and their families, medical staff, and other employees.

5. Participate in self-development and educational activities to maintain skills and stay current with the latest information in the field.

6. Provide education to the multidiscipline team as requested and/or needed.

7. Provide ongoing support and education to new families beyond the birth of the baby, via phone support, breastfeeding support groups, and community events.

Required Work Experience:

1. 3-5 years of experience working with mothers and infants.

Preferred Work Experience:

1. 1-3 years of experience as a Lactation Consultant.

Skills and Competencies:

1. Strong assessment skills, able to develop, implement, and evaluate breastfeeding plans.
