Key Responsibilities:
- Adhere to all railroad safety and operational regulations.
- Conduct thorough inspections of car components to ensure they meet AAR and FRA standards.
- Access computer systems for information regarding car components, destinations, lading, and repair records, and to document repair details, bad orders, and car releases.
- Proficiently operate cutting torches in various positions.- Achieve qualifications in SMAW and FCAW welding processes, including 2F, 3F, and 4F positions.
- Utilize forklifts, light cranes, and car moving equipment.
- Operate various vehicles, with a potential requirement to obtain a CDL for Locomotive Service truck operation.
- Rerail cars and locomotives using appropriate equipment and perform tasks related to wreck service on the railroad.
- Fabricate, straighten, and replace steel components such as grab irons, handholds, ladders, ladder brackets, and sill steps.
- Repair, remove, or replace defective parts including wheels, safety appliances, truck and brake equipment, couplers, yokes, draft gears, and air brake valves, as well as weld broken parts or secure new components.
Physical Requirements:
- Engage in heavy work, occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Perform activities such as stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing.
- Walk long distances over uneven surfaces.
- Exhibit auditory and visual acuity for tracking and inspection tasks.
- Experience exposure to equipment that may increase heat levels on occasion.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to understand both oral and written communication.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Provide clear instructions and guidance.
- Possess mechanical aptitude.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Relevant mechanical experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least one year of welding and fabrication experience.
- Completion of a Carman apprenticeship.
- Veterans and transitioning service members are encouraged to apply, especially those with military roles that align with this position.
Training:
- Participate in paid training, including one week of Mechanical Safety Orientation and six weeks of craft-specific training focused on welding and fabrication.
- Travel expenses for training will be reimbursed, and lodging will be covered as per union agreements.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Company benefits become eligible on the first day of the second month after hire (during training), including an 80/20 plan for employees, spouses, and eligible dependents, along with Union Benefits, Medical options, $20K Life Insurance, and a 401(K) plan.
Work Conditions:
- Shift work is required across all three shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with shifts assigned based on seniority. The work environment includes both shop and outdoor settings.
