Disease Intervention Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Disease Intervention Specialist to join our team at the Galveston County Health District. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in safeguarding the citizens of Galveston, Brazoria, and Chambers from sexually transmitted diseases (including AIDS) by providing prevention counseling, condom distribution, and HIV/Syphilis testing to at-risk populations.
Responsibilities:- Perform office, clinic, and fieldwork for sexually transmitted diseases, needle sharing, and partner notification.
- Input case data in the EMR and/or State database(s).
- Provide Syphilis/HIV case management according to Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) guidelines.
- Maintain DIS standards according to DSHS Program Operating Procedure Standards (POPS).
- Perform venipuncture in the field, private homes, or office locations.
- Assure that patient intake and consent forms are signed and filed.
- Provide on-going case management until all sex/needle sharing partners are dispositioned according to DSHS.
- Maintain frequent contact with patients, clients, physicians, nurses, and professional organizations.
- Coordinate with Public Health Nurse(s) and/or medical providers to ensure provision of adequate and timely services to all clients.
- Start investigations within one working day of receiving assignment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Bachelor or Associate degree from an accredited college or university preferred. Relevant experience may be substituted for education.
- Minimum of six months of experience in STD-related field preferred.
- Current Certificate of completion of Foundations of Counseling and Testing Course from DSHS, preferred.
- Successful completion of the FSTDI STD course within six months of employment.
- Must complete Foundations of Counseling and Testing Course within first 3 months of employment.
- Phlebotomy experience or ability to complete venipuncture training within six months of employment.
- Knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS infection.
- Must be able to communicate at different levels with infected individuals and maintain confidential information.
- Bilingual in Spanish highly preferred.
- Ability to obtain CPR certification within six months of employment.
- Ability for spur-of-the-moment transportation without relying on organization vehicles.
- Must possess or readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Department of Motor Vehicle check may be required, if applicable.
- Customer service oriented.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills including MS Office.
- Must be willing and able to work evening and weekend hours if necessary.
- Must be in compliance with GCHD Immunizations policy.
- Must be in compliance with ICS training requirements.
- Must pass criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening.
