Job Summary

We are seeking a Tax Manager to join our team in Northeast Ohio. This position requires an entrepreneurial professional with a passion for exemplary client service. The Tax Manager will be responsible for the efficient and accurate preparation of all clients' tax returns, as well as assisting partners and senior managers in making decisions on tax situations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Practice Management
    • Assume full responsibility for larger tax returns and delegate to tax preparers as needed.
    • Participate in client meetings and tax planning efforts to assist the Auditing & Accounting department with larger clients.
    • Act as a resource for tax preparers and A&A staff on specific tax issues and questions.
    • Delegate and manage governmental tax examinations, and represent clients before taxing authorities.
    • Ensure the smooth flow of tax returns through the tax preparation system to ensure accurate, complete, and timely preparation and delivery of all clients' tax returns.
  • Business Development
    • Identify opportunities to expand the scope of current engagements through identification of client needs.
  • Technical Knowledge
    • Perform technical tax review and final approval of all tax returns and governmental tax examinations of any complexity.
    • Communicate important tax developments affecting the firm's clients to the appropriate firm personnel.
    • Possess a complete knowledge of the firm's philosophy and its opinions on tax matters.
    • Maintain knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.
  • Practice Skills
    • Work with partners and senior managers to develop practical and effective tax strategies for clients.
    • Make effective use of firm resources to complete a project and manage multiple client projects.
  • Client Development
    • Assume client service responsibility for clients, working directly with clients where responsibility is delegated from partners and senior managers.
    • Develop a professional relationship with clients and serve as the main point-of-contact to ensure clients are fully informed of engagement progress.
  • Leadership/Staff Development
    • Maintain a familiarity with qualifications of all tax staff members and review staff assignments for appropriateness.
    • Supervise tax staff and provide on-the-job training.
    • Work to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting with recruiting, performance evaluations, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in accounting and/or other appropriate academic major required.
  • Current and valid CPA license or equivalent required.
  • Member in good standing with AICPA required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite of products as well as tax preparation, compliance, and research software.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in public accounting, demonstrating a proven progression in tax return complexity, scope, and research.
  • At least two years' experience representing clients before taxing authorities.
  • At least one year of experience supervising and directing the work of others.
  • Excellent project management, tax research, and writing skills.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
  • Dedication to teamwork and leadership.
  • Advanced technical skills in a variety of tax and accounting areas, along with well-developed and applied management and supervisory skills.
  • Integrity within a professional environment.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent same-day travel for work at client offices, meetings, and seminars using a personal vehicle.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel with overnight stays for work at clients, meetings, or seminars using a personal vehicle.
  • Occasional overtime work required throughout the year, with heavy overtime work required from January to April 15.
