Maintenance Worker Leader

This position is located at Shenandoah National Park and is assigned to the Division of Facilities Management, Trails and Backcountry Branch. The purpose of the position is to lead and perform at the journeyman level, the maintenance, repair, and construction of more than 500 miles of park trails and related facilities.
Key Responsibilities- Responsible for maintenance of unpaved foot, equestrian, and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) trails that may be in steep, rugged, mountainous terrain.
- Leads a five to twelve person trail crew and/or volunteer work groups.
- Provides input to Trails Supervisor/Manager on trail work priorities, personnel, training recommendations, and equipment or supply needs.
- Responsible for daily on-site decisions concerning workflow and assignment and distribution of work for the crew.
- Teach and demonstrate trail maintenance and construction methods and techniques to crews and volunteers and holds frequent safety tailgate sessions.
- Performs all types of trail work that includes masonry and carpentry, rigging, and manual labor duties.
- Responsible for administrative tasks including creating work plans and work schedules, estimating costs and manpower/equipment needs, entering project and work order data into a computer software system, mapping and compliance documentation, tracking budget, preparing reports, etc.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
- You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- Government housing is not available.
- If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- Government Charge Card: You will be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
- (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
