Job Summary

This position is within the Fleet Maintenance Division of the DC Department of Human Resources. The mission of this division is to ensure the operational readiness and safety of the fleet through effective maintenance and repair services.

The individual in this role will act as a working supervisor, leading a team of three or more employees in performing maintenance and repair tasks on a diverse fleet, including ambulances, trucks, and other vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will:

  • Interpret relevant regulations and departmental guidelines to ensure compliance in maintenance and repair operations.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and perform necessary adjustments and repairs on vehicles and equipment.
  • Execute running repairs, including tire changes, brake adjustments, and electrical repairs.
  • Diagnose issues and determine appropriate corrective actions to restore equipment functionality.
  • Provide on-site support for firefighting equipment, including refueling and operational assistance.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed using automated systems.
  • Coordinate with management regarding maintenance activities and shop operations.
  • Operate heavy-duty and light-duty wreckers for transporting defective vehicles.
  • Overhaul specialized firefighting equipment and perform extensive testing to ensure reliability.

Qualifications and Education

To qualify, candidates must possess specialized experience that has equipped them with the necessary skills and knowledge for this role. This experience should be relevant and typically at a level equivalent to the next lower grade in the career progression.

Licenses and Certifications

Applicants must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements for operating departmental vehicles. Additionally, candidates are required to maintain certifications in Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) levels, including:

  • EVT I Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus
  • EVT II Fire Pumps and Accessories
  • ASE certifications for Truck, Brake, and Diesel Engine

These certifications must be obtained within 18 months of employment and kept current thereafter.

Working Conditions

The role involves working in environments that may expose the incumbent to hazardous conditions, including toxic fumes and extreme weather. Safety equipment and protective clothing are required at all times. The incumbent will also be subject to physical demands such as lifting and maneuvering heavy equipment.
