Position Summary
The Campus Safety Officer role is integral to Patrol Operations within Campus Safety. These officers serve as the primary safety and security personnel for the University. Responsibilities encompass a range of duties, including but not limited to, patrolling the campus and its facilities, and assisting the campus community with various issues and concerns. Multiple positions will be filled from this posting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct patrols of designated areas, physically inspecting buildings and verifying the security of doors, windows, entries, and exits.
  • Respond to fire alarms and emergencies.
  • Coordinate with fire, police divisions, and other public safety organizations.
  • Provide initial responses to emergencies and criminal incidents on University property, conducting preliminary investigations to ascertain outcomes.
  • Offer general assistance to the campus community and visitors.
  • Apprehend violators of applicable laws and regulations occurring on or involving university property.
  • Operate University patrol vehicles and communication equipment as required.
  • Prepare written reports and maintain logs of campus activities.
  • Serve as the Division dispatcher, managing incoming service calls, monitoring fire and intrusion alarms, dispatching officers, and overseeing CCTV systems on campus.
  • Comply with all Division and University policies, procedures, directives, rules, and regulations.
  • Participate in the interview panel during the Division's selection and hiring process when requested by Senior Management.
  • Engage in the Division's recruitment and accreditation initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 21 at the time of hiring.
  • Possession of a High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license required, with insurability under University guidelines; or obtain a valid Colorado driver's license within the specified timeframe.
  • Successful completion of a written job-related skills examination.
  • Passing a comprehensive background check, including criminal history, motor vehicle report, and verification of employment and education.
  • Passing a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and human performance evaluation by a University-approved physician.

Post-Hire Employment Requirements

  • Ability to obtain or possess a City and County of Denver Security Guard License within three weeks of hire.
  • Successful completion of initial certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, and TPR (Threat Pattern Recognition) Use of Force Basic within three weeks of hire.
  • Maintenance of re-certifications in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED and TPR to ensure job-related skills are current.
  • Completion of an annual physical assessment test as part of TPR re-certification to maintain job-related physical fitness standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent credit hours in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 6+ months of related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.

Working Environment
As field-based personnel, Campus Safety Officers frequently work outdoors in various weather conditions. This position may involve any shift or combination of shifts as deemed necessary by management. Officers are considered essential personnel and may be required to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.

Physical Activities
All personnel required to hold a City and County of Denver issued Security Guard License must successfully pass a job-related human performance evaluation as part of a conditional offer of employment. This evaluation will assess the following:

- Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic cones (10 lbs) over a distance of 5 feet.
- Carry: Transfer fire extinguisher (15 lbs) from wall cabinet to area of need within 5 minutes.
- Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic barricades (27 lbs) over a distance of 10 feet.
- Push/Pull: Open/Close parking lot roll gates and building doors (15 lbs) within 5 minutes.
- Push/Pull: Drag incapacitated person (65 lbs) within 5 minutes.
- Climb: Access 10th floor during emergencies; must pass performance test (60 steps in under 5 minutes).
- Climb: Access rooftop hatches (17 times in under 5 minutes).
- Dynamic Posture: Respond to first aid calls, perform CPR, and reach for objects (1 from floor) within 5 minutes.

Specific vision abilities required include correction to 20/30 vision, close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must also possess the ability to hear for safety reasons inherent to the essential functions of the job. Maintaining fitness standards is crucial for the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency services, and perform other physically demanding tasks.

Work Schedule
This is a non-exempt position requiring a 40-hour work week with varied hours during a 24/7 schedule. Officers participate in a seniority-based shift bid and may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
