We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Police Officer Trainee. As a trainee, you will participate in a comprehensive training program at a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified basic police academy and maintain academic standards required.
Key Responsibilities- Attend and participate in a comprehensive training program at a P.O.S.T. certified basic police academy.
- Learn, train, and perform all related learning and testing activities related to the technical knowledge, skills, and physical abilities required to perform in the capacity of a sworn police officer.
- Comply with dress code and appearance standards of P.O.S.T. Academy.
- Participate and successfully complete physical fitness activities of P.O.S.T. Academy and of the Delano Police Department.
- Participate in the firearms course resulting in achieving a qualifying score for firearms qualification under California Penal Code Section 832 both at the P.O.S.T. Academy and at the Delano Police Department.
- Follow prescribed safety policies, practices, and procedures.
- Ensure readiness to participate in all assigned daily activities with required gear and supplies.
- Interact and communicate with academy staff, students, and City personnel.
- Participate in weaponless self-defense training.
- May be required to operate an assigned motor vehicle to and from the P.O.S.T. academy, and operates a motor vehicle during defensive drivers training.
- Successfully receives OC Spray and/or a Taser certification.
- Keep Delano Police Department Supervisor informed of any absences, accidents, incidents, or injuries and provides documentation when required.
- Perform a variety of other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
- Associate's Degree with emphasis in criminology, law enforcement/administration of justice, political science, social or behavioral science or a related field, preferred.
- One (1) to two (2) years of experience in security, intelligence, investigations or law enforcement in the armed forces, general clerical or technical experience in a law enforcement setting, or active participation in a law enforcement-oriented cadet program, preferred.
- Able to obtain a valid Certificate of Graduation from a P.O.S.T. Police Academy within six months of hire.
- Possess a Title 22 First Aid/CPR Certificate or be able to obtain by the end of the Police Academy.
- Work periodically on a rotating shift workweek of 4 or 5 consecutive days, weekends, holidays, overtime, and respond to recall when paged and be physically available.
- Maintain a valid California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
- Failure to complete P.O.S.T. Police Academy and all eligibility requirements for promotion to Police Officer within six months of commencing the Academy Program will be grounds for termination.
- 3% Wage increase FY 24/25
- $50 per month Certification Pay
- $50 per month for a Class "A" driver license
- $50 per month Bilingual Pay for Oral Interpretation
- $100 per month Bilingual Pay for Written Interpretation
- Tuition Reimbursement up to $600 annually for courses that enable employee to gain skills in their area of responsibility
- Longevity Pay
- 5% working above classification Pay
- Shift differential
- Uniform Allowance (only Public Safety Dispatchers, Property and Evidence Custodian, and Community Service Officers) $70 per month.
