Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled MRI Research Specialist to join our team at Massachusetts General Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, preparing patients, positioning, setting imaging parameters, and displaying images.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learn pulse programming to troubleshoot problems with unique pulse sequences used at the Martinos Center.
  • Train large investigator populations on new and emergent pulse sequences that may enhance their research.
  • Work closely with the physicist at the Center to educate the Principal Investigator community about upcoming software and hardware changes.
  • Prepare patients, position them, set imaging parameters, perform computer processing, and display images.
  • Perform scheduled quality control procedures on MRI scanners and other related equipment, record QA results, and report any potential equipment-related problems to the supervisor.
  • Prepare for and perform intravenous injections of MR contrast agents, understand and communicate possible contraindications, and monitor for and respond to adverse reactions.
  • Insert IV catheters as needed.
  • Instruct patients and visitors in MR safety procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to safety practices by all persons entering the MRI area.
  • Review outpatient and/or inpatient schedules to confirm exams have been protocoled and reviewed for potential contraindications.
  • Act as the final checkpoint for patient safety and protocol clarification.
  • Communicate with Radiologists for protocol clarification when necessary.
  • Use designated department protocols and report any issues to the site supervisor and/or Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Assist in the instruction of visitors and medical staff rotating through the area, explaining patient procedures, processing, equipment operation, safety practices, etc.
  • Mentor new staff and fellow technologists as necessary.
  • Adhere to MGH "Good-To-Go" policies and practices.
  • Review the MRI patient procedure screening form with the patient and complete the MRI staff-specific questions.
  • Utilize departmental specific tools to confirm contrast dosing and patient safety.
  • Maintain a neat work environment, including patient care areas, MR scan rooms, MR control rooms, and reading areas.
  • Monitor inventory and par levels of necessary supplies and communicate with the Manager/Supervisor.
  • Assist the receptionist and other Department staff in various duties as necessary.
  • Develop knowledge of MR physics through on-the-job training, reading, etc., and keep current on new developments in MR imaging.
  • Identify hazardous system malfunctions, secure the area, and remove patients and personnel from the magnet bay during emergency situations.
  • Co-lead the Martinos MR Safety Committee (MMSC) meetings with the Lead MR Research Specialist.
  • Assist the MMSC in updating and creating MRI safety and MRI screening content, and updating the center's online policies.
  • Oversee the onboarding and management of new industry-sponsored studies with assistance from the MR Operations Manager.
Requirements
  • Mental/visual ability to operate complex electronic equipment and instrumentation and perform quality control procedures on equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to work with staff with various degrees of medical and technical experience.
  • Strong computer skills and a working knowledge of MR physics.
  • Ability to provide appropriate care to various age populations.
  • Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
Qualifications
  • Required: BLS/ARRT (MR)
  • Preferred: MRSO
  • Required: Graduate of an approved Imaging Program
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree
  • Required: Minimum of 1 year of experience
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to magnetic fields for which risks are not yet established; possible exposure to liquid/gaseous in the event of a system quench.
  • Mental/visual ability to operate complex electronic equipment and instrumentation and perform quality control procedures on equipment; ability to transfer patients to MR scan tables and push tables from prep rooms to exam rooms; must lift and transfer patients to stretchers, lift/move MRI coils, etc.
