POSITION TITLE: Senior Accountant

DEPARTMENT: Accounting STATUS: Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant plays a crucial role in maintaining the financial integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for reconciling account balances and bank statements, managing the general ledger, and executing month-end closing processes. A successful candidate will possess strong analytical capabilities and a comprehensive understanding of accounting principles to effectively interpret financial reports and forecasts. The role necessitates excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as it involves collaboration with both management and operational teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Accountant will collaborate closely with the Accounting Manager and the finance team, as well as liaising with other departments. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting account reconciliations to facilitate the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing and reporting activities.
- Gaining a thorough understanding of financial accounting practices and the general ledger framework utilizing Syspro software.
- Participating in periodic inventory counts.
- Evaluating financial reports and records for accuracy.
- Overseeing journal entries prepared by junior accountants to ensure precision.
- Providing training and mentorship to junior staff and supervising clerical personnel.
- Performing variance analyses and preparing account reconciliations.
- Managing daily banking operations.
- Investigating the treatment of non-standard transactions and the application of GAAP.
- Ensuring the accuracy of accounting information through the recording, verification, consolidation, and entry of transactions.
- Preparing and documenting asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account data.
- Maintaining and balancing subsidiary accounts through verification, allocation, posting, and reconciliation of transactions, as well as resolving discrepancies.
- Overseeing the general ledger, preparing trial balances, and generating related reports.
- Summarizing financial status by gathering information and preparing balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial documents.
- Facilitating external audits by analyzing and organizing general ledger accounts and providing necessary information to auditors.
- Documenting processes through flowcharts and narratives.
- Assisting in budget preparation, forecasting, and cash management activities.
- Supporting the accounting team in special projects and identifying opportunities for workflow enhancements.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in financial accounting and reporting, preferably within a manufacturing context.
- Proficient in MS Office, particularly Excel, Access, and Word.
- Familiarity with GAAP and SOX regulations.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- Commitment to confidentiality.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- BA/BS Degree in Business with a focus on accounting.
- Preference for candidates holding CPA or CMA certifications.
- Experience with General Ledger and MRP systems in a manufacturing environment is advantageous.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This role requires regular sitting, frequent walking, and the use of hands for various tasks. The employee may occasionally need to lift or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position operates during standard business hours, with a business casual dress code.
