About the Role

We are seeking a qualified Expedition Waste and Hazardous Materials Specialist to join our team in Palmer Station, Antarctica. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and contribute to the success of our Antarctic program.

Estimated Salary: $90,000 - $100,000 per year

Responsibilities:

  1. Act as point of contact for waste management and participate in weekly staff meetings and teleconferences.
  2. Coordinate the collection, packaging, and shipment of solid and hazardous waste from the station.
  3. FOLLOW ALL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES ASSOCIATED WITH POSITION DUTIES.
  4. E nsure timely completion of all paperwork and documentation related to waste management.
  5. Update and review JHA and SDS binders and computer folders accordingly.
  6. Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for various tasks.
  7. Verify the quality of shipping containers and address any discrepancies promptly.
  8. P rocess hazardous and radioactive waste in accordance with established procedures, which may include labeling, weighing, and storing drums or items in shipping containers.
  9. Perform qualitative testing on items (e.g., pH testing, flash point testing).
  10. C onsider consolidating and lab packing wastes as required per profile and classification.
  11. O perate various pieces of equipment safely on station (e.g., Skytrax, ATVs).
  12. S tore processed hazardous wastes according to segregation requirements.
  13. K eep waste inventory records up-to-date and accurate.
  14. P erform quality-assurance checks on inventory databases and files.
  15. P rovide briefings on hazardous waste, solid waste, and spills.
  16. A ct as Spill Team Lead for the entire station, create spill reports, and conduct training and drills.
  17. O rganize, orient, and train Spill Team members for outside spill response and coordinate with visiting vessel staff as needed.
  18. M aintain inventory of spill supplies in the two spill-vans and satellite spill kits.
  19. A ssist the station mechanic with weekly fueling activities.
  20. M aintain/deploy spill-boom supplies for fueling.
  21. A ssist with general station needs, such as snow removal, radio communication on assigned days, mini-GASH, GASH, and House Mouse activities.
  22. C onduct community Waste Briefs or other informational sessions if necessary.
  23. C ollect and process Resale Items as needed.
  24. M aintain Maximo Resale work orders and provide an end-of-season report to McMurdo Resale Admin and ASC Property Manager.
  25. M aintain a flexible schedule based on Vessel Operations, unusual hours, and other station-wide activities.
  26. E nsure seasonal replacements receive proper training and maintain a log of this information.
  27. T roublshoot any issues that arise and escalate them as needed.
  28. S upply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if needed.
  29. P erform regular use of drum dollies, cargo straps, banding, shovels, pallet jacks, power tools, and other tools.
  30. P erform regular physical activity, including bending, consistent lifting and carrying, reaching, and gripping.
  31. D isplay self-motivation in physically demanding and atypical work environments; the position involves approximately 70% outdoor tasking.
  32. M aintain flexibility and positivity in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.
  33. P erform duties in support of Operations Division metrics (as provided by the supervisor).
  34. S upport the achievement of ASC metrics, whether they are directly or indirectly affected by this position's work activities.
  35. C omply with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  36. W ork to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.
  37. R esponsible for maintaining a safe work environment and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  38. P erform other duties as required.
