In your role within the Secure Hardware and Foundational Technologies group, you will contribute to the secure launch of new products and the investment in emerging technologies. We seek a technically proficient Senior Security Engineer to fortify our foundational platforms, including operating system kernels, virtualization, device emulation, firmware, and hardware. Your responsibilities will encompass conducting security assessments, threat modeling, developing tools for large-scale security issue detection, and performing hands-on security evaluations.

The ideal candidate will be adept at engaging in intricate engineering discussions and applying their extensive security knowledge to conduct thorough risk assessments and threat analyses. You will provide clear technical guidance and risk mitigation strategies to engineering and business leaders across various levels.

By leveraging your extensive experience in security engineering related to enterprise networking, hardware security, operating system fortification, and cloud infrastructure, you will significantly influence the future of cloud computing.

We expect you to excel in multiple domains and make substantial contributions to the IT Security team and various groups throughout Amazon. Security engineers are tasked with crafting elegant solutions to complex business challenges while adhering to security engineering best practices. Additionally, you will mentor junior engineers and serve as a security thought leader within the organization.

Fostering constructive dialogue and resolving differing viewpoints is essential. Engineers in this position are expected to actively participate in planning the IT Security team's initiatives and continuously seek opportunities for process enhancements. A deep understanding of at least one specialty area, making you a sought-after resource within Amazon, is crucial, alongside a broad comprehension of information security applications across various technical fields.

To succeed in this role, you will need a blend of troubleshooting, technical, and communication skills, along with the ability to manage a variety of tasks, including project and software development work. This position offers significant career advancement opportunities as you acquire new security skills through your responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Basic Qualifications

BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years of experience in Security Engineering or developing security capabilities, supporting engineering projects from inception to delivery, with 2 years in two or more of the following technical areas: Virtualization security (Xen, KVM, QEMU) - Hardware security (PCB, JTAG, UART, SPI, ROM, microcode, custom ASIC/FPGA) - x86 and/or ARM chipset and firmware security (TPM, UEFI, TrustZone, Secure Boot, JTAG, PCIe) - Physical security testing at the machine level
- Security testing of computing platforms (Server, PC, or Mobile) - Experience with various physical tamper resistance and/or tamper detection techniques

Preferred Qualifications

MS in Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
- Proven ability to prepare technical specifications and executive-level communications
- Familiarity with AWS core services (EC2, S3, IAM, Kinesis, Lambda, KMS, VPC, etc.)
- Experience in designing for relevant security standards (TCG, IEEE, NIST, FIPS, PCI, ISO 28000 series)
- Knowledge in designing for cryptographic security (e.g., certificate management and PKI, attestation, TPM/HSM)
- Expertise in Windows, Linux, and hypervisor security, particularly in cloud environments
- Proficient understanding of common security-relevant protocols (e.g., SSH, TLS, DNS, DHCP, NTP, ICMP)
