Position Overview

UPMC in Central PA is looking for enthusiastic and driven individuals to participate in our comprehensive Medical Assistant Trainee Program. This program is designed to provide a robust training experience, including enrollment in a UPMC-sponsored Medical Assistant course, which encompasses clinical rotations, theoretical skills modules, and an externship placement at a UPMC Central PA outpatient facility.

Program Requirements:

  • A commitment to a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week for a duration of 4-5 months, which entails:
    • Mandatory attendance in-person for classroom sessions, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
    • A dedication to self-study of course materials for 7-10 hours each week outside of classroom hours.
  • An hourly compensation rate of $17.46.
  • A commitment to remain in a full-time Medical Assistant position at UPMC in Central PA - Health Services Division for a minimum of 18 months following the start of the trainee program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist healthcare providers in patient care activities, ensuring compliance with protocols and enhancing patient satisfaction.
  • Manage patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Oversee lab reports, hospital documentation, scheduling, insurance verification, and front office responsibilities.
  • Prepare and maintain examination rooms, instruments, and equipment while adhering to infection control standards.
  • Facilitate patient flow, assist during examinations, gather patient information, and provide necessary instructions.
  • Respond to calls, deliver patient education, and perform basic lab tests, including phlebotomy and EKGs.
  • Support healthcare providers during procedures and accurately document details in medical records.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, maintain confidentiality, and follow UPMC Health System policies.

Contributes to system-wide competencies and performs assigned tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current enrollment in a Medical Assistant training program is preferred.

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33 PA Child Abuse Clearance
  • Act 34 PA Criminal Background Clearance
  • Act 73 PA FBI Fingerprint Clearance
