As a Building Permit Specialist, you will play a vital role in the construction and building sector. This position encompasses a variety of responsibilities associated with building permits, inspections, and adherence to building regulations. The Specialist aids in the management of building permits and ensures compliance with local, state, and international building standards.

**Key Responsibilities:**

  1. Process permit applications by receiving, reviewing, and verifying the completeness and accuracy of building permit submissions and related documents in line with established protocols and building regulations.
  2. Ensure compliance with codes by confirming that proposed construction initiatives adhere to applicable building standards, zoning laws, and other relevant criteria.
  3. Offer guidance and general interpretations of building codes to applicants and stakeholders.
  4. Coordinate and schedule building inspections at various phases of construction projects.
  5. Deliver customer service to assist clients (including contractors, architects, and homeowners) on-site or virtually regarding permit requirements, application statuses, and code inquiries.
  6. Represent the department and engage professionally with internal and external stakeholders, fostering positive relationships and promoting a culture of compliance and safety.
  7. Provide information and guidance on the permitting process and necessary documentation.
  8. Issue permits.
  9. Accurately calculate and collect permit fees.
  10. Maintain precise records of permits issued, inspections performed, and fees collected.
  11. Generate reports and correspondence related to permit applications and inspections.
  12. Offer technical support and guidance to internal staff and external stakeholders regarding building codes, permit requirements, and inspection protocols.
  13. Collaborate with other departments, agencies, and officials involved in the permitting and inspection processes.
  14. Attend meetings and training sessions to remain informed about changes in building codes and regulations.
  15. Perform assigned duties in alignment with the agency's guidance, culture, and approach.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

**Qualifications:**

A combination of experience and education that likely provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical pathway to obtain the necessary knowledge and abilities includes graduation from high school and prior experience or coursework in building inspection, construction technology, or a related discipline.

Possession of ICC Permit Technician certification or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe is required.

Knowledge of building codes, zoning regulations, and construction practices is essential.

Experience in customer service and administrative support is preferred.

Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders are necessary.

The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment is crucial.

Attention to detail and the capacity to accurately review technical documents are required.

Proficiency in using computer software applications for permit tracking, data entry, record keeping, and correspondence is essential.

**Work Environment:**

This role is typically office-based or remote. It may require occasional overtime or weekend work, particularly during peak construction periods.

The environment is fast-paced, necessitating the ability to multitask and prioritize workload effectively.
