Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Refrigeration Mechanic to join our team at the State of Minnesota. As a Refrigeration Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintaining the environment climate in all District 8 buildings, ensuring a healthy and comfortable environment for employees. You will also provide technical assistance and manpower as needed for the District 8 buildings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate, repair, and maintain all heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment throughout the District.
  • Service, maintenance, and repair of all gas-fired heating and refrigeration systems associated with air conditioning and HVAC systems.
  • Journeyman-level mechanical and millwright work to all air handling systems throughout the District, including supply air fans, return air fans, exhaust fans, makeup air units, roof top units, unit heaters, transfer fans, and entryway heaters, hot water pumps, and radiation systems.
  • Routine maintenance and repair of electrical components associated with HVAC equipment, such as electrical motors, motor starters, and safety and control switches with low to 24 volts.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, install, and maintain building systems and components.
  • Assist with general building maintenance activities.
Requirements
  • Two or more years of journey-level refrigeration mechanic experience in the maintenance and repair of major air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Universal EPA Certification for Handling of Refrigerants.
  • A valid Class D Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Specials Class Engineer's License within 1 year, Unlicensed Individual Electrical Work Registration within 6 months, and Unlicensed Individual Plumbing Work Registration within 6 months.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Second-class C Boiler's License.
  • Knowledge/training in Building Automation Controls.
  • Diploma or degree in HVAC/Refrigeration from a vocational-technical training program.
  • Power Limited Technician or higher electrical license.
Physical Requirements

The employee is required to work in a variety of areas throughout the complex, and in some cases, with a wide variety of tools (both power and hand). The employee frequently uses gross and fine dexterity in a variety of positions, including reaching outward and overhead, bending, working with outstretched arms and/or while lying on the back, working from heights, and bending over.

The employee works in unusual positions and locations, including on a lift 30 feet in height, on ladders and scaffolding, ditches and trenches, and behind and around other equipment, and obstacles. The employee works with power tools, machinery/instruments, and equipment, up to 50 pounds and rarely up to 100 pounds. Loads over 100 pounds are lifted occasionally, but with the aid of lifting devices and coworkers.

Fine dexterity and eye coordination of the hands, wrists, and fingers to handle, feel, scrape, pounds, or use force is constant up to 25 pounds. Working conditions include vision, noise, and vibration, respiratory and chemical hazards. The employee is required to work outside in all seasons, exposed to weather elements (both hot and cold). The employee will work in day and night time conditions and walk on even and uneven/sloping grounds. The employee will operate heavy equipment on and off the roadway. The employee will continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling) while operating equipment and performing various other tasks frequently and on a daily basis.

The employee must frequently move heavy objects by pushing, pulling, or lifting and carrying.
