Director of Psychiatric Nursing Services

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Director of Psychiatric Nursing Services supervises the psychiatric nursing services of an assigned area, which may include the Acute Psychiatric Services Branch of Health and Human Services or other assigned areas. The ideal candidate will have experience in psychiatric nursing and possess strong leadership and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and determine the clinical aspects of psychiatric nursing services, including clinical skills application, quality of nursing care, and individual nursing performance of unit nurses.
- Contribute to employee performance evaluation and management.
- Implement applicable state regulations pertaining to the provision of nursing services within a Psychiatric Health Facility or other assigned areas.
- Assist in performing nursing functions, including admitting/discharging patients, assessing patient condition, receiving and executing physician orders, administering tests and medications, recording/maintaining patient charts, administering emergency care, and other related functions.
- Communicate with staff of adjoining shifts to gather/exchange information; review notes of events occurring on preceding shifts and reviews special instructions.
- Makes regular rounds to review patient charts, issue special instructions, and discuss problems involving nursing care, treatment, or staffing with the Program Manager, nurses, or Staff Psychiatrist.
- Monitors the condition of acutely mentally ill patients who may be dangerous to themselves and/or to others, and who may be assaultive or unpredictable.
- Coordinates patient care with Mental Health Therapists.
- Works with staff on all matters of patient safety.
- Works with PHF Program Manager to reassign shift personnel as required.
- Confers regularly with Program Manager, Staff Psychiatrist, and/or Clinical Director to discuss problems; confers regularly with appropriate manager to discuss problems or other issues.
- Maintains security of assigned facilities.
- Audits care plans and charts.
- Maintains records of unit/shift activities.
- Reviews various documentation and processes, forwards, or takes other action as appropriate.
- Responds to emergency calls.
Requirements
- Four years of experience in nursing administration or supervision with experience in psychiatric nursing.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing or related field with experience in psychiatric nursing and two years of experience in nursing administration.
- Possess a master's degree in psychiatric nursing or related field with experience in administration.
- Possession of a current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
