Position: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Museum Practices and Scholarly Engagements
Type: Postdoctoral Opportunities
Location: Remote

The Gund, the academic museum of Kenyon College, is dedicated to fostering a vibrant environment for artistic exploration and scholarly inquiry. Established in 2011, The Gund has rapidly developed a notable exhibition program that showcases significant works of late twentieth and twenty-first century art, while also nurturing a growing collection of over four hundred pieces.

The inaugural Postdoctoral Fellowship in Museum Practices and Scholarly Engagements is designed to provide essential experience for emerging scholars aspiring to pursue careers in museum education and curatorial roles. This fellowship aims to enhance the educational mission of The Gund by integrating contemporary art into the academic curriculum, impacting over 1500 students across various disciplines each semester.

The fellow will work closely with the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Education, who will provide mentorship throughout the fellowship. The focus will be on investigating lesser-known aspects of the permanent collection to create valuable resources for faculty, thereby enriching the teaching and learning experience with art. The fellow will also support undergraduate students through course engagements with exhibitions and the permanent collection, and may assist in mentoring a group of student interns dedicated to visitor engagement.

Additionally, the fellow will organize workshops aimed at sharing research findings with faculty, fostering a community of intellectual discourse centered on art at The Gund. Participation in the museum's activities will be integral to the fellowship experience, with access to The Gund's collection, exhibitions, and Kenyon's academic resources.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a PhD in art history or a related field, obtained within five years of the application deadline. The fellowship is open to candidates regardless of age or nationality.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field aligned with The Gund's focus on modern and contemporary art.
  • Evidence of scholarly excellence.
  • A strong commitment to pursuing a career in art museum education and curatorial practices.

Compensation:

The fellowship offers an annual salary of $55,000, along with access to Kenyon College's comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, and tuition waivers for employees' children.

Application Process:

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Candidates should submit:

  • A cover letter detailing their interest in the fellowship
  • A writing sample or published paper (up to 10,000 words)
  • A curriculum vitae outlining education, employment history, honors, and publications
  • Three letters of recommendation
