ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Outpatient Registered Nurse CAP 1 serves as an introductory role within the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is responsible for delivering and coordinating high-quality clinical care, which includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a designated group of patients. Responsibilities may involve delegating appropriate tasks to direct patient care personnel, including but not limited to RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As a vital member of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this role engages in decision-making, educational activities, leadership roles, and quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care outcomes and operational efficiency.
KEY DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS:
All tasks and responsibilities are to be executed in alignment with Fresenius Kidney Care policies, nursing standards, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Conducts essential functions under the supervision of the Supervisor, with support from the Clinical Educator, Preceptor, or in collaboration with fellow Registered Nurses.
- Engages in continuous, systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatment for assigned patients, documenting findings in the patient medical record, adjusting treatment plans as necessary, and notifying the Team Leader, Charge Nurse, Supervisor, or Physician as required.
- Evaluates, collaborates, and documents the educational needs of patients and families to provide both initial and ongoing education.
- Directs and collaborates with direct and ancillary patient care staff to ensure the safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy to assigned patients.
- Administers medications as prescribed or according to approved protocols, documenting the medical justification and effectiveness.
- Initiates or assists with emergency response protocols as needed.
- Acts as a resource for the healthcare team, participating in staff training and the orientation of new employees as assigned.
- Ensures proper laboratory collection, processing, and shipping procedures are followed, rescheduling any missed or inadequate laboratory collections.
- Identifies expected outcomes, documents, and updates nursing assessments and care plans for assigned patients in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team.
- Ensures patient understanding regarding transplant and treatment modality options.
- Required to fulfill CAP requirements for advancement.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

- This role involves direct patient care that frequently requires heavy lifting, patient mobility assistance, and ambulation support. Equipment aids and/or coworkers may provide assistance.
- Frequent, prolonged periods of standing are required, and the employee must be able to bend over.
- The employee may occasionally need to move, with assistance, equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. and lift chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 lbs. to a height of 5 feet.
- The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, featuring controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
- Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
- Daily responsibilities include desk work, computer tasks, and interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians.
- The position may necessitate travel to training sites or other facilities.
- Employees may be required to perform essential functions of this position in other locations with similar physical demands and working conditions.
- Employees must take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment. Note that failing the Ishihara Test for Color Blindness does not disqualify employment. The Company will consider reasonable accommodations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assigned oversight of Patient Care Technicians/LPNs/LVNs/RNs as a Team Leader or designated Nurse in Charge, after fulfilling all the following:
- Successful completion of all Fresenius Kidney Care education and training requirements for new employees.
- A minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse is required.
- A minimum of 3 months of experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis as a Registered Nurse is required.
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current appropriate state licensure.
- Current or successful completion of CPR BLS Certification.
- Must meet the practice requirements in the state of employment.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Entry-level for RNs with less than 1 year of Nephrology Nursing experience in the last two years as a Registered Nurse.
- Preferred minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Preferred experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis.
