Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Worker to join our team at the U.S. Department of the Interior. As a Maintenance Worker, you will be responsible for performing a variety of maintenance tasks, including operating motor vehicles and engineering equipment, using technical practices and tools related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry work, and interpreting instructions and plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a variety of motor vehicles and engineering equipment.
  • Use knowledge of technical practices, tools, and equipment related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry work.
  • Interpret and apply instructions, plans, specifications, and codes.
  • Accurately use knowledge of measurements and measuring tools.
Working Conditions

This position requires working in a variety of seasonal weather conditions, including temperatures ranging from -40 to 90 degrees. You will be exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain, and may work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment. You may also be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.

Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B, or higher, Commercial Driver's License with tanker and air brakes endorsements before your Enter on Duty date.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work overtime.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You must pass the Respirator Fit test.
  • You must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old and have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Technical Practices.
  • Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Use of Measuring Instruments.
  • Knowledge of Materials.
Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
