Job Summary

The University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist to join our team. As a Medical Technologist, you will be responsible for performing routine and complex medical laboratory tests for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, as ordered by physician. You will exercise independent judgment, make decisions, troubleshoot complex problems, develop new tests, and provide leadership and direction to technicians and lab assistants.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine and complex technical procedures on biological specimens.
Perform tests accurately, promptly, and efficiently, following lab policies and procedures.
Use computer systems effectively, entering results of analyses into the computer for storage and reporting.
Operate, calibrate, clean, and maintain equipment used in testing.
Follow safety procedures and recognize and correct errors, documenting corrective action.

Quality Control

Utilize quality control criteria to ensure validity before reports are issued.
Perform all quality procedures as required, such as proficiency testing, temperature control, reagent control, equipment calibrations, and function verification tests.

Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting

Remedies basic, intermediate, and complex instrument and procedural problems.
Assists other MTs, technicians, and lab assistants with problem-solving.

Phlebotomy

Performs phlebotomy and/or arterial punctures, as assigned.

Training and Leadership

Trains new employees, demonstrating bench techniques for routine and complex procedures.
Assists with training students completing their formal clinical internships, delivering theoretical information and bench techniques.
