Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Diesel Engine Technician to join our team at Hire Military Talent. As a Diesel Engine Technician, you will be responsible for inspecting and servicing diesel locomotives, diagnosing malfunctions, and performing repairs and maintenance tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect and Service Diesel Locomotives

Inspect and service diesel locomotives to ensure compliance with company, federal, and industry standards.

Diagnose Malfunctions

Diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other issues related to the locomotive mechanical system.

Perform Repairs and Maintenance

Repair, replace, or rebuild locomotives and diesel engine components as needed.

Operate Equipment

Efficiently operate equipment, including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment.

Communicate with Colleagues

Communicate technical information, job briefing information, and other work-related information with colleagues verbally, through writing, telephone, radio, and intercom.

Read and Interpret Information

Read and interpret information from diagrams, schematics, graphs, and charts, and input it into a computer as needed.

Ensure Equipment Availability

Ensure all equipment or materials are available and ready for use as needed.

Develop Positive Working Relationships

Develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers.

Ensure Compliance with Regulations

Requirements
  • Basic Keyboarding Skills

Education or Work Experience

4 years of education or work experience (or a combination of the two) as a mechanic repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, diesels, or current journeyman's mechanical card.

Verbal and Written Communication Skills

Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to colleagues and supervisors.

Valid Driver's License

A valid driver's license is required.

Visual Inspection Skills

Experience making quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances.

Reading and Understanding Instructions

Experience reading and understanding instructions, including operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents.

Aptitude Test

Candidates for this position must pass a pre-employment Diesel Mechanic Aptitude Test.

Physical Ability Test

Candidates must qualify on a Physical Ability Test (PAT) prior to employment, background check, and drug/alcohol testing.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate-Degree in Mechanical Field

An Associate-Degree in a mechanical related field is preferred.

Certified and/or Licensed Diesel Mechanic

Certified and/or licensed as a diesel mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is preferred.

Formal Auto/Diesel Engine Training

Completed a formal auto/diesel engine training program is preferred.

Experience as Mechanic in Other Fields

Experience as a mechanic in other fields, such as military, aviation, nuclear, marine, is preferred.

Welding Certificate

A welding certificate is preferred.

Experience Working Outdoors

Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions is preferred.

Experience Wearing Personal Protective Equipment

Experience working in an environment that requires wearing personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection, is preferred.

Experience Working with Heavy Equipment

Experience working with, on, and around moving heavy equipment is preferred.
