1. Patient Admission and Evaluation:

  • Records all vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature in the patient's medical record.
  • Documents allergies and corresponding reactions.
  • Effectively performs relevant assessments tailored to the patient's age.
  • Identifies any abnormalities and promptly reports them to the healthcare provider.
  • Reviews and updates the medication list during each visit.
  • Facilitates patient movement from the waiting area to examination rooms while keeping patients informed of any delays.

2. Support for Healthcare Providers:

  • Collects and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Handles medical instruments proficiently.
  • Prepares patients for various medical procedures.
  • Changes dressings, removes sutures, and performs blood draws.
  • Prepares and administers medications as instructed by healthcare professionals.
  • Administers vaccinations as required.
  • Inputs healthcare provider orders into the electronic system as necessary.
  • Collaborates with healthcare providers to ensure effective medical and nursing management of patient care.

3. Maintenance of Medical Supplies:

  • Ensures examination rooms are adequately stocked with necessary medical supplies and maintains instruments, preparing sterilization as needed.
  • Maintains logs and conducts required checks (e.g., refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen levels, cold sterilization fluid changes).
  • Conducts inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Reports any equipment malfunctions promptly.

4. Appointment Scheduling and Documentation:

  • Schedules appointments and tests; enters orders into the electronic health record as directed by providers.
  • Ensures all relevant reports, lab results, and information are available in the patient's medical record prior to appointments.
  • Pre-certifies patients for insurance coverage as needed.
  • Establishes referral contacts.

5. Emergency Response:

  • Provides emergency care as required within the Medical Assistant's scope of practice.
  • Initiates or assists in patient care effectively and responsively based on the situation.
  • Triages emergency situations appropriately and engages additional resources as necessary.
  • Adheres to emergency policies, procedures, and protocols efficiently.

6. Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Triages patients over the phone using established protocols to assess visit urgency and duration for scheduling.
  • Schedules appointments and manages patient charts.
  • Handles medical billing processes.
  • Transcribes dictated notes accurately.

7. Documentation and Record Keeping:

8. Effective Communication:

  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with healthcare team members regarding patient conditions, care plans, and satisfaction needs.
  • Follows approved reporting formats when sharing patient information.
  • Identifies and responds to abnormal symptoms or changes in patient conditions, prioritizing actions and reporting changes to medical providers.

9. Safety and Compliance:

  • Administers medications, treatments, and procedures safely and timely according to healthcare provider orders and nursing policies, including adherence to standard precautions.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to minimize fall risks for patients and injury to self.
  • Implements infection control measures, including isolation procedures and proper hand hygiene.
  • Follows established protocols for the disposal of hazardous materials and narcotics.
