Position Overview

We are thrilled to announce an opening for a Commissioning Editor at Taylor & Francis, focusing on a diverse array of academic and professional publications within the Engineering Team, specifically targeting the expanding Construction and Property portfolio.

As a key member of the team, reporting to the Publisher for Engineering, you will play a crucial role in enhancing our offerings by formulating a robust commissioning strategy aligned with team objectives. This includes cultivating an understanding of the academic and professional landscapes, as well as assessing competitor strengths and weaknesses to capitalize on market gaps and opportunities.

Your collaboration with existing authors and editors will be essential, alongside engaging with editorial colleagues across the broader Engineering team and other internal departments such as production, marketing, rights, and sales to advocate for our titles and ensure the successful handover of manuscripts and achievement of revenue targets. The role may also involve attending conferences and conducting outreach on campuses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Achieving annual commissioning and revenue targets by identifying and commissioning new publications that address market demands.
  • Meeting publishing deadlines by collaborating with an editorial assistant to ensure timely manuscript submissions and smooth transitions to production.
  • Conducting market research to identify opportunities for new projects.
  • Recognizing market needs and recruiting authors to develop publications that fulfill those needs, while evaluating proposals for quality and market viability.
  • Presenting quality project proposals to the publishing committee, including preparing internal documentation and preliminary financial assessments.
  • Negotiating contract terms with authors or their representatives to secure favorable agreements.
  • Collaborating closely with team editors to refine and uphold the strategic direction of the lists within the Engineering team.
  • Engaging with authors and internal colleagues in editorial, production, marketing, and sales to ensure that objectives are met.
Qualifications

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Self-motivated individual capable of working efficiently and independently while effectively collaborating with global team members.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with a strong organizational aptitude and attention to detail, alongside financial acumen for budgeting and data analysis.
  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet management, and database usage.
  • Experience in academic publishing, preferably within North America, with familiarity in the academic book publishing process.
  • Proven experience in commissioning within academic or professional publishing.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks under pressure while taking initiative.
  • Excellent teamwork skills to engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Innovative and proactive approach to problem-solving and addressing inquiries.
  • Strong awareness of the publishing business and a quick learning ability.
