Role Summary

Under the supervision and final verification of a licensed Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Support Specialist is responsible for preparing, packaging, and labeling IV and unit dose medications in accordance with prescriber directives and established protocols. This role requires precise mathematical calculations to ensure accuracy while maintaining a sterile working environment.

Key responsibilities include delivering floorstock medications, patient-specific prescriptions, emergency supplies, and crash cart trays to designated patient care areas.

The specialist may also handle the processing and delivery of controlled substances, ensuring proper inventory management and documentation.

Additionally, the role involves collecting and returning medication orders, as well as unused and expired medications from patient care areas to the pharmacy for appropriate handling. Related charge functions are also part of the responsibilities.

Responding to inquiries from hospital staff and customers, the Pharmacy Support Specialist provides essential information regarding medication orders and performs other assigned duties as necessary.



Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Full pharmacy licensure or temporary licensure with the State of Michigan, with the expectation of obtaining full licensure within one year of hire.
  • Prior experience in a pharmacy setting and/or completion of formal pharmacy technician training, including familiarity with medical and pharmaceutical terminology, is preferred.
  • Certification is preferred.

Required Skills

Visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate computer systems for maintaining patient profiles, capturing charges, entering prescription data, and accessing patient information. Ability to read prescriptions and identify impurities in IV solutions accurately. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with physicians, patient care staff, and other department personnel. Mathematical proficiency to perform necessary calculations, requiring knowledge of the metric system and calculator usage. Ability to transport medication delivery carts and lift approximately 10-20 pounds. Capability to frequently lift and transport medications, including IV solutions, requiring exertion of up to 60 pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods and move throughout various units/patient rooms of the hospital to dispense medications.
