Basic Function

*This is a temporary, part-time role without benefits for a six-month duration. Hours may vary between 20-30 hours per week based on program requirements. Availability for weekend and evening shifts is necessary.*

Under the supervision of the Public Education and Outreach team within the Public Works Department - Environmental Services Division, this role will contribute to outreach initiatives and assist with related field assessments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Engage with residents of multi-family and single-family homes, as well as property managers for businesses and apartments, to educate them on effective recycling practices.
  • Conduct inspections and monitor waste enclosures and recycling bins, documenting findings, and providing ongoing outreach to residents, property managers, and maintenance staff.
  • Support the planning, staffing, and execution of events, including promotional activities and evaluations.
  • Assist in coordinating communication, timelines, and tracking for grant-funded projects.
  • Develop, organize, and distribute educational materials for Environmental Services and public outreach initiatives, focusing on water quality, pollution prevention, recycling, and composting.
  • Participate in school outreach, including maintaining aquariums and supporting other educational efforts.
  • Help manage water quality testing equipment and oversee equipment checkouts with volunteers.
  • Utilize desktop computers, copiers, and printers, ensuring accurate record-keeping and orderly filing of digital information.
  • Contribute to optimizing the City's internal waste reduction and recycling programs across various facilities.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in community outreach (events, promotional materials, social media) is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
Licenses and Requirements:
  • Valid WA Driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
  • Ability to pass a national criminal background check.
