Job Summary:
As a Veterinary Specialist in Zoonotic Disease Control, you will play a crucial role in managing the day-to-day operations of the Zoonosis Control (ZC) Program under the supervision of the Communicable Disease Manager. Your key responsibilities will include supervising, planning, and coordinating the work of the ZC staff, as well as performing advanced veterinary and epidemiological work to direct veterinary public health activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement disease control methods and procedures to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases.
  • Collaborate with local health departments, physicians, veterinarians, and other stakeholders to advise on disease control measures.
  • Conduct field surveillance work, including collection of arthropods and vertebrates, and collect or direct the collection of human and animal specimens for diagnostic testing.
  • Investigate and control disease outbreaks, and design and conduct special epidemiologic and disease control research.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, providing training and presentations to DSHS program personnel, animal control officers, and medical professionals.

Requirements:
  • Knowledge of veterinary medicine, animal and human disease prevention and control methods, zoonotic diseases, epidemiology, and state and federal zoonotic disease control rules and regulations.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and/or oversee the work of others, and to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using a personal computer and basic applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Power Point, and Teams.
