The Medical Specimen Technician plays a critical role in supporting the department's mission by performing various laboratory functions to ensure high-quality patient care. This includes conducting phlebotomy procedures, processing and receiving specimens, accessing specimens, distributing specimens, and performing specific test procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts phlebotomy procedures to collect patient samples for testing
  • Processes and receives specimens from patients, including accessioning and distributing them to the appropriate laboratories
  • Supports the department's mission by ensuring accurate and timely specimen processing
  • Works collaboratively with other staff members to resolve problems and adapt behavior to meet the needs of patients and staff
  • Maintains knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; completion of phlebotomy course preferred
  • No prior work experience required; current license or trainee license in the state of practice preferred
  • Strong computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process

Working Conditions

  • Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue
  • Occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment may exist
