The State and Local Sales and Use Tax team offers invaluable guidance to our clients in addressing their most critical sales tax challenges.

Our tax consultants engage with a diverse range of industries and tax jurisdictions, assisting clients in pinpointing solutions and making informed choices through thorough research of tax regulations, representing clients in tax disputes, and proposing strategies to reduce their sales tax obligations.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver exceptional client advisory and planning services in sales and use tax for multi-state businesses – approximately 60% of your time.
  • Drive the growth and profitability of the State and Local tax practice by generating new revenue from existing clients, cross-selling, and acquiring new clients – approximately 30% of your time.
  • Act as a Career Advisor, mentor, or coach to one or more team members, providing constructive and timely performance feedback – approximately 10% of your time.
  • Collaborate effectively with clients, local and regional RSM SALT teams, the broader RSM tax team, and RSM audit and consulting colleagues.
  • Manage various sales and use tax consulting projects, including technical research memoranda, nexus studies, exposure quantification, voluntary disclosures, audit defense, and appeals.
  • Lead and cultivate the business relationship for complex engagements, focusing on delivering high-value, quality tax advice while seeking to expand service offerings to clients.
  • Identify opportunities for cross-selling various SALT services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Possession of one of the following credentials: CPA, CMI, JD, or LLM.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience in providing sales and use tax consulting services within public accounting, consulting, or legal environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of various state and local sales and use tax laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, including tax planning, restructuring, due diligence, audit defense, and state controversy work.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with clients to address inquiries or gather necessary information for tax service requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% (current travel requirements are limited).

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills; adept at prioritizing multiple tasks.

At RSM, we believe that an employee's compensation reflects their experience, performance, and skills relevant to their current role.

The compensation range for this position is $97,200 - $183,700. Individuals selected for this role may be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on both firm and individual performance.
