Terrain Modeling and Monitoring Scientist 3

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Terrain Modeling and Monitoring Scientist 3 to join our team at KBR. As a key member of our Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) team, you will play a critical role in supporting the USGS EROS Center Integrated Science and Applications Branch (ISAB).

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership to production teams and scientists
  • Investigate production system errors and implement solutions
  • Generate, understand, and derive 1-meter seamless elevation tiles using prioritized disparate 3DEP Original Product Resolution (DEM)
  • Project and transform data to map specifications (Continental U.S.)
  • Implement solutions to resolve areas of discrepancy in adjacent DEM sources
  • Recognize source and derivative elevation model anomalies to mitigate error propagation
  • Capture metadata and execute accuracy checks against Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC)-level mosaics
  • Provide research and testing for changes/enhancements to the production process
  • Perform regional vertical accuracy assessments and provide assistance/guidance on reference checkpoint data
Requirements:
  • Minimum of MS in Earth Science, Natural Science, Physical Science, or related field with emphasis in geography, remote sensing, GIS, software engineering, or information technology
  • At least 5 years of directly related professional experience (willing to consider differing combinations of education/experience)
  • Fundamental knowledge of elevation data and mapping applications
  • Proficient in geospatial data processing and experience working with GIS software applications (such as ArcGIS Pro)
  • Fundamental understanding of remote sensing science and the characteristics of geospatial data
  • Basic background in Python programming and experience authoring process documentation, metadata, and reports
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including effective questioning, listening, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-motivation, dependability, and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience generating elevation maps and working with Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL)
  • Experience in conducting investigations related to geospatial data and leading technical teams
Work Location:

This position supports a team anchored in Sioux Falls, SD and is offered in either a hybrid remote/onsite or a fully remote work environment.

Special Requirements:
  • Three years of continuous residency in the US for issuance of a Government Security credential
  • The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for government facility access and user account
