Phlebotomist Job Description

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, phlebotomy position located at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. The successful candidate will be able to work a varied schedule, with start times ranging from 4am to 10:30am and end times between 8am and 7pm. The position requires the ability to work every other Saturday and Sunday.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age-related standards and in accordance with departmental policies, protocols, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills, adhering to the AIDET model and optimizing patient safety to reduce the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Receive and review physician orders, ensuring that all necessary information is included for appropriate lab services, and enter accurate orders for lab tests in accordance with department policies, protocols, and procedures.
  • Process specimens in a timely manner to ensure stability and integrity of samples, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport in accordance with established protocols and policies.
  • Review and record refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records, reporting areas of concern through the Corrective Action Log and to maintenance for repair.
  • Understand the operation and maintenance of equipment pertinent to the job, following up with all outstanding orders on the manifest log and communicating all timed, completed, or uncompleted draws/charges/results as appropriate.
  • Maintain a safe work environment, adhering to biohazard waste procedures and ensuring proper storage and timely pickup of biohazardous waste.
  • Perform lab-related clerical duties, including order entry, verification of test result receipt, patient information retrieval, and utilization of email, medical record systems, handheld, and desktop devices.
  • Use department resources efficiently, participating in efforts to reduce costs and streamline work processes.
  • Adhere to continuing education expectations, completing and signing off on competency assessments.
  • Demonstrate the value of teamwork on a consistent basis, interacting with and assisting others in a professional manner.
  • Apply critical thinking, sound decision-making, and judgment to investigate and resolve challenging situations.
  • Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
