Salem, Massachusetts, United States Uncommon Schools Full time

Company Overview

Uncommon Schools is a network of high-performing public charter schools that provide excellent education to students in historically under-resourced communities. Our schools reflect the diversity of our student population, with over 60% of our teachers and staff identifying as people of color. We have 52 schools across five cities, serving over 20,000 students. Uncommon graduates persist in and graduate from college at five times the national average, thanks to our strong academic, co-curricular, and social-emotional learning programs.

Roxbury Prep

Roxbury Prep consists of four schools serving students in grades 5-12. We prioritize strong, authentic relationships between teachers and students, supported by effective school systems and an engaging instructional model. Our students have a 98% college acceptance rate and collectively earned $1.3 million in scholarships last year.

Job Summary

Middle school history teachers at Uncommon Schools work in grade-level teams and departments to develop self-guided learners. Teachers develop subject mastery and understand the socio-emotional changes middle school students experience, empowering students' voices and developing them into global citizens through textual analysis, analytical writing, and discourse.

Responsibilities

  • You will facilitate student-led discourse of historical topics, where students grapple with open-ended guiding questions, engage in peer-to-peer debate, and synthesize arguments.
  • You will guide students to understand the author's claim and the power of sourcing while developing the skills of argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through primary and secondary source analysis.
  • You will teach an in-house curriculum that prioritizes the diverse histories of Indigenous peoples, African Americans, women, ancient cultures, and the impact all of these groups have had on the development of the United States.
  • You will build an inclusive and safe environment where students are empowered to use their voices to express evidence-based opinions and perspectives.

Requirements

  • A commitment to Uncommon Schools' mission and investment in our vision for being an anti-racist organization.
  • A demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social-emotional and academic development.
  • An enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students.
  • A self-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives.

Compensation

The starting compensation for this role is between $57,000 and $89,000, depending on professional experience, education, training, certifications, tenure with Uncommon Schools, and work location. Please note that ranges may differ for staff working from locations other than Boston.

Benefits

We offer comprehensive, flexible, and competitive benefits that support the personal health, wellness, and finances of our staff and their families.
