Position Overview:

The Principal Mechanical Engineer at Ellaway Blues Consulting is tasked with delivering specialized knowledge and support in the design, upkeep, troubleshooting, and management of all mechanical systems within the facility. This role encompasses leading quality assurance initiatives during equipment maintenance and supervising the work of contractors and technical staff. Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), the Principal Mechanical Engineer is pivotal in assessing mechanical systems and directing the engineering team.

This position also includes mentorship and leadership duties, contributing to the overall development and execution of policies, plans, budgets, and initiatives concerning Health, Safety, Security & Environmental (HSSE) matters, while promoting the Organizational & Cultural advancement of the Engineering Department and broader business objectives.

  • Provide technical oversight and monitoring of all critical fixed mechanical assets within operational facilities, including piping and structural components.
  • Act as the Mechanical Integrity and technical liaison for inspections concerning fixed equipment integrity.
  • Monitor and report on the performance and reliability of fixed equipment using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to improve efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Offer technical assistance for projects, including large-scale expansions, capital initiatives, and modifications.
  • Ensure that capital and operational projects are executed safely, within budget, on schedule, and in compliance with procurement policies and procedures.
  • Participate in, and occasionally lead, pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including overseeing equipment installations.
  • Facilitate discussions and provide engineering solutions to routine maintenance challenges within the plant.
  • Diagnose equipment-related issues and efficiency challenges.
  • Review engineering reports and assist in troubleshooting and completing tasks.
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers in their professional development.
  • Evaluate plant equipment operating parameters and engage in technical discussions with operations to optimize functionality.
  • Lead assessments following plant trips to identify root causes and propose recommendations.
  • Ensure that equipment history records are meticulously updated with details such as downtime, cause codes, priority codes, man-hours, materials used, and incurred costs.
  • Review and suggest modifications to the annual planned maintenance programs and equipment audits to inform future initiatives.
  • Implement approved reliability and plant enhancement projects within budgetary and scheduling constraints.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the development and execution of long-term equipment planning programs, including end-of-life assessments and repair-or-replace evaluations for plant assets.
  • Identify potential plant threats through Condition Monitoring programs and trend analysis.
  • Generate reliability reports based on completed inspections.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and diagnostic inspections on plant machinery.
  • Support turnaround operations, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, schedule, and budgetary requirements.
  • Oversee Quality Assurance/Quality Control for off-site repairs and rebuilds.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times with clients and vendors, ensuring a positive reputation for the company.
  • Adhere to all relevant company policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations:

  • Preferred certifications include API 510, API 570, API 653, API 580, CMRP, CRE, and CRL.

Education, Experience, and/or Training:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a process plant environment is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of static and rotating equipment, maintenance, and reliability engineering is required.
  • Familiarity with Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPS) is preferred.
  • Understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Project Management principles is preferred.
  • Experience in leading teams is preferred.
