Position Overview:
This role is responsible for conducting thorough investigations, assessments, and sampling to identify, evaluate, manage, and predict employee exposure to environmental risks stemming from chemical, physical, ergonomic, and biological hazards. The incumbent will provide expert industrial hygiene services and strategic guidance on health and safety matters to management and employees across the state.
This position may allow for remote work within Arizona, depending on departmental needs and consistent achievement of performance expectations.
The State of Arizona promotes a work environment that emphasizes flexibility, independence, and trust. Many employees across various agencies participate in the State's Remote Work Program, enabling them to work from home, in offices, or in shared spaces. All work, including remote tasks, should be conducted within Arizona unless prior authorization for an exception is obtained.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and enhance the hearing conservation program, hazardous energy control program, exposure control program, respirator protection program, AED program, and confined space entry program, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.
- Conduct industrial hygiene inspections and evaluations to address health-related issues in the workplace, including indoor and outdoor air quality assessments, noise monitoring, and surface sampling for hazardous substances.
- Provide expert advice on safety and health matters, interpret regulations, and consult with management, employees, and external stakeholders regarding safety concerns. Maintain the Safety Clothing catalog.
- Engage in incident review processes and conduct thorough investigations as necessary. Develop a comprehensive understanding of departmental goals, operational procedures, and safety requirements.
- Manage ergonomic assessments and provide recommendations to improve workstation design, reducing fatigue and the risk of repetitive strain injuries.
- Participate in safety meetings to gather and share safety insights and concerns. Identify potential safety issues and offer guidance on proper safety protocols. Support employee safety committees in advocating for safe work practices.
- Maintain and service industrial hygiene testing equipment. Safely operate state vehicles and equipment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned related to the position.
Qualifications:
Knowledge:
- In-depth understanding of industrial hygiene principles, practices, and associated hazards, including their toxicological effects and mitigation strategies.
- Familiarity with federal and state regulations, including OSHA and EPA standards.
- Expertise in sampling and testing methodologies for various environmental agents.
- Awareness of agency policies and procedures related to safe operational practices.
Skills:
- Ability to identify hazards and devise practical solutions to minimize employee exposure.
- Effective communication of risk levels based on workplace observations.
- Proficient in delivering safety training and preparing comprehensive reports.
- Skilled in operating and maintaining environmental sampling equipment.
Abilities:
- Recognize health, environmental, and physical hazards in the workplace.
- Assess data integrity during sampling and studies.
- Prepare detailed investigative and technical reports.
- Interpret complex regulations and apply them to relevant situations.
- Organize and maintain technical records for easy access.
- Proficient in using Google Workspace.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as an Industrial Hygienist.
- A minimum of four years of experience in industrial hygiene within public or private sectors.
- One year of specialized education in safety or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees must possess a valid driver's license, complete necessary training, and pass all required driver's license record checks. Employees who operate personal vehicles for state business must maintain the required liability insurance.
All newly hired state employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
