Job Summary

As a critical leadership role, this position plays a pivotal part in safeguarding public health by providing scientific expertise, laboratory services, and guidance on disease surveillance, prevention, and emergency response.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct the day-to-day functions of the Georgia Department of Public Health Laboratory, ensuring the highest standards of testing accuracy, regulatory compliance, and innovation in public health diagnostics.
  • Lead a team of laboratory professionals, providing scientific leadership and direction for the adoption and implementation of administrative and technical changes.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to optimize laboratory services, including surveillance, outbreak investigation and control, newborn screening, and emergency preparedness.
  • Build collaborations with public/private sector entities to establish partnerships in the service of improving public health.
  • Oversee the planning, preparation, and administration of the Georgia Department of Public Health Laboratory budget and federal grant applications.
  • Ensure fiscal accountability for general revenue funds and federal categorical grant funds, meeting all grant deliverables and federal reporting requirements.
  • Supervise program directors for newborn screening, microbiology, emergency preparedness, and laboratory operations, ensuring a robust quality management system.
  • Travel as required to perform duties, including between laboratory locations in Decatur and Waycross.
Requirements
  • Doctorate degree in a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of management/supervisory experience in healthcare services/clinical laboratory.
  • Must possess an earned doctoral degree in biology, microbiology, chemistry, or a related field, and be certified or eligible for certification by an accepted certifying agency.
  • Meet State of Georgia licensure and Federal (CLIA88) certification requirements for a Clinical Laboratory Director.
  • Pass an approved certifying examination within 18 months of hire date as a condition of employment.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, and the candidate must pass Select Agent (SA) security clearance.
