Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled actuary to fill a Lead Actuary 3 position in our Property & Casualty Actuarial Services Unit. The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert for all issues related to property & casualty rates and will be responsible for conducting job analyses, developing performance expectations, and supervising property & casualty actuarial staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct job analyses and identify duties for job descriptions of reporting positions.
  • Develop performance expectations and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Assign, plan, and check the work of property & casualty actuarial staff.
  • Coach and instruct property & casualty actuarial staff.
  • Conduct supervisory fact-findings into alleged misconduct and/or performance deficiencies.
  • Determine if an employee has successfully passed their probationary or trial service period.
  • Review and analyze filed rates and detailed supporting information submitted by property & casualty insurers.
  • Determine whether insurers' filed rates meet the requirements of Washington state law, and where applicable, federal law.
  • Compose detailed objection letters to filers, noting where filings lack sufficient supporting information, where work is not actuarially sound, and where proposed rates would violate Washington or federal law.
  • Take final action (approval/disapproval) on rate filings.
Requirements
  • Fourteen (14) years of property & casualty actuarial experience with 3+ years in a supervisory or lead actuary role.
  • An associate degree and twelve (12) years of property & casualty actuarial experience with 3+ years in a supervisory or lead actuary role.
  • A bachelor's degree and ten (10) years of property & casualty actuarial experience with 3+ years in a supervisory or lead actuary role.
  • A master's degree and eight (8) years of property & casualty actuarial experience with 3+ years in a supervisory or lead actuary role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting Washington Title 48 RCW and Title 284 WAC.
  • Previous experience in insurance regulatory compliance.
  • Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
  • Experience with predictive modeling, such as GLMs and tree-based models.
  • Experience supervising other supervisory level staff.
