Job Title: LEP Tutor

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated LEP Tutor to join our team at the University of Denver. As a LEP Tutor, you will play a vital role in supporting students with neurodiverse learning needs, providing one-on-one tutoring and academic support to help them achieve their academic goals.

Job Summary

The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) at the University of Denver is a unique program that serves students who are neurodiverse learners. Our students require competent and skilled tutors to assist them in learning the academic and non-academic skills needed to be successful here at DU. As a LEP Tutor, you will work under the direction of the Tutoring Coordinator and LEP Associate Director to provide academic support and guidance to our students.

Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring and academic support to students with neurodiverse learning needs
  • Assist students in building confidence, independence, and academic skills in a one-on-one setting
  • Collaborate with LEP Academic Counselors to meet the learning needs of students
  • Actively maintain and update Availability on Accudemia, our tutoring scheduling software
  • Update appointment information (changes, cancellations, etc.) within 24 hours
  • Help students clarify questions so they know why they were having trouble with the material
  • Give students academic tips and tools they can use after they graduate from DU
  • Help students think critically about the course material
  • Help students explore new ways of learning
  • Help students develop a growth mindset so that they don't feel 'stuck' with their learning methods
  • Help students stay accountable before and during tutoring appointments
  • Complete all Tutoring Assessments in a timely manner and clearly communicate what was covered in the session and the resulting outcomes
  • Communicate via phone, email, or in-person on a consistent basis with the Tutoring Coordinator/Lead Tutor to update them with any questions, comments, or concerns they may have regarding LEP tutoring
  • Keep schedule updated and actively communicate with Tutoring Coordinator, students, and Lead tutor regarding cancellations of appointments
  • Additional tasks as needed and requested by the Tutoring Coordinator
Requirements
  • Ability to learn how to tutor students in a one-on-one environment
  • Ability to implement principles of Universal Design for Learning when working with neurodiverse learners
  • Ability to work with students who are experiencing anxiety and stress
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Excellent and proactive communication skills
  • Able to adapt tutoring behaviors based on best practices and LEP needs
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate level student
  • Prior tutoring experience
  • Experience working with students from neurodiverse backgrounds
Work Schedule

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. The hours for this position are flexible. Tutors can set their hours of availability but will only be paid for actual tutoring time. Tutor hours are dependent upon student appointment requests. There are other paid opportunities such as Prep time, Admin time, and time spent on professional development activities required by the Tutoring Coordinator. Tutors may not work over 40 hours per week, or 80 hours per 2-week pay period.

All new tutors are required to complete the New Tutor Orientation online training and the CRLA Level 1 (Basics of Tutoring) online training before they will be allowed to begin tutoring.

Work Environment
  • Multiple options available: Small, Individual tutoring rooms, Medium sized tutoring rooms with multiple sessions occurring, and Large tutoring space for Drop-in and scheduled appointments occurring
  • Stress level fluctuates throughout 10-week quarters from low to moderate to high
  • Noise level is quiet on our floor
  • Virtual appointments are allowed, but tutors must also have and offer in-person availability
Physical Activities
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period

This position will remain open until filled. LEP Tutoring applications will be accepted a quarter ahead of time. For example, if tutors are needed for the Fall Quarter, then the application will be live starting in the Summer Quarter. Please submit the required materials listed below in order to be considered.

Hourly Range

The hourly range is $21.25.

This position is eligible for federal work-study, which requires eligibility through the Financial Aid Office. This position is also open to non-work study funded students.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, available market information, and course enrollment, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
