Job Summary

The North Thurston Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lifeguard and Student Supervisor to join our team. As a key member of our staff, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our students in aquatic environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise students in pool complexes and other designated areas to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Intervene promptly and effectively in situations where students are not in control or may be in danger.
  • Model appropriate behavior and provide guidance and reinforcement of safety rules and expected behaviors to students.
  • Provide limited first aid and assess injuries to determine whether medical attention is required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and medical information.
  • Implement emergency preparedness procedures as needed.
  • Follow Board policies and stay up-to-date with updates and changes.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate's Degree or successful completion of the Educational Testing Service competency examination.
  • Certification in first aid, CPR, Lifeguard, and/or operation of defibrillators.
  • Successful experience working with culturally diverse families and communities.
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to assist, console, and manage students who may be emotional, distraught, or frustrated.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and in control in challenging situations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal direction and take the initiative to seek clarity and take action when needed.
  • Knowledge and support of student discipline procedures.
  • Command and proper annunciation, spelling, syntax, and use of the English language.
  • Ability to protect the confidentiality of student information consistent with FERPA requirements and good judgment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of office and computer equipment and standard office software and student information system software.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual skills in a common language to the District such as Spanish, Korean, and Vietnamese.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties.

The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students, exposed to student noise and learning resource noise levels.

The employee may be required to travel in school-owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
