Job Title: Fixed Wing Pilot - Predator Control Specialist

Job Summary:

The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fixed Wing Pilot to join our team as a Predator Control Specialist. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for flying a PA-18 or similar style airframe fixed wing aircraft to support the protection of Utah's livestock and wildlife resources from predators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Flying a fixed wing aircraft with a gunner or observer on board to locate and/or shoot predatory animals or aid ground crews.
  • Checking and scheduling routine maintenance, validating airworthiness of aircraft placed under their responsibility by the Department.
  • Receiving recurrent flight training and providing training and instruction to other state personnel in the proper procedures and techniques of shooting from aircraft, safety aspects, and program policies regarding aircraft operations.
  • Conducting safety evaluations of personnel participating in aerial activities, aircraft, and hangar.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Program Manager or the Commissioner of Agriculture.
  • Providing air transportation for the Governor, senior staff, dignitaries, and other clients or state employees.
  • Evaluating personnel, including hiring, determining workload, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions.

Requirements:

  • Current Commercial Pilot Certificate and Instrument Rating.
  • Minimum flight hour requirements, including recent flight experience.
  • Ability to fly in low level conditions, land on unimproved and/or remote terrain, and fly in adverse weather conditions.
  • First or second-class medical certificate in accordance with FAA regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1,200 hours PIC in Single Engine Land (SEL) airplane.
  • 100 hours PIC in a tailwheel aircraft (PA or similar).
  • 100 hours PIC flight time in the make and model of aircraft or similar type, to be used on UDAF missions.
  • 250 hours flight experience as PIC for wildlife damage management operations.
  • 500 hours flight experience in UDAF type flying.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to adverse, inclement, and varying weather conditions.
  • Considerable and strenuous physical exertion, including frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
  • Ability to possess and discharge firearms, with a government background check and meeting any additional requirements.
