Job Summary

The Occupational Therapist is a key member of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Section under Geriatrics & Extended Care/Patient Care Services. This role is assigned to the Housing and Urban Development / VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Occupational Therapy (OT) Section, working under the supervision of the Supervisory Rehabilitation Therapist.

Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive patient evaluations, including activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, strength, range of motion, sensation, perception, cognition, visual impairment, home safety and environmental modifications, driver screens, wheelchair seating and mobility, orthotics/prosthetics/splint fitting and training, and dysphagia.
  • Review patient records to assess the appropriateness of occupational therapy intervention.
  • Perform specialized evaluations related to cognitive loss.
  • Provide comprehensive patient care for O.T. patients.
  • Modify treatment plans according to patient response to best meet established goals.
  • Document treatment progression and/or modifications according to departmental and Medical Center standards.
  • Serve as a Clinical Instructor for Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapist Assistant students as assigned.
  • Provide intake assessments to help determine functional strengths and limitations for the population served to assist the multidisciplinary team.
  • Consult with staff and physicians through patient presentations, attendance, and interdisciplinary patient care conferences and/or specialty clinics.
  • Assist in the performance of, or independently perform, highly specialized and diversified treatment procedures, with a focus on serving Aging and Disabled Veterans providing direct patient care in the community, Veterans home, and/or clinic as assigned, based on the assessed needs of the patient.
  • Plan and implement specialized treatment programs and apply occupational therapy procedures to patients.
  • Primarily work with Veterans who are transitioning from homelessness to stable housing or who are transitioning to a higher level of supportive housing in efforts to maintain functionality that continues to support independent living.
  • Interact with the patient and family to explain therapy procedures, discuss treatment plans, and motivate Veterans and family members to comply with indicated regimens and post-discharge activities.
Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm or 8:00am-4:30pm. Telework: Available on an Ad-hoc basis. Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

Requirements
  • You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
