Position Overview:

The Youth Justice Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, screening, and coordinating Community Service opportunities for juvenile offenders. This role involves investigating, supervising, and providing guidance to juvenile individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

Key Responsibilities:

Primary Duties:
  • Establish contracts with various work sites while fostering positive relationships.
  • Collaborate with juvenile probation clients to ensure they fulfill their Community Service requirements, tracking their progress and addressing any issues that arise.
  • Identify and recruit suitable work sites, clearly communicating expectations to both the sites and the juvenile clients.
  • Collect essential information from work sites, including agency details, available work days and hours, and job descriptions.
  • Maintain regular communication with work sites to ensure ongoing support and compliance.
  • Keep an updated list of clients in need of Community Service hours.
  • Meet with clients and their families to clarify job assignments and expectations.
  • Provide monthly progress reports to probation officers, documenting clients' completion of hours through detailed work logs.
  • Ensure all work environments are safe and free from hazards, prohibiting the use of power tools and toxic substances.
  • Supervise assigned cases, ensuring adherence to probation rules and reporting any violations.
  • Conduct regular office visits, home visits, and school visits as necessary, while also providing transportation for clients.
  • Offer counseling to juvenile offenders and their families, making referrals to treatment centers and community resources as needed.
  • Compile and analyze results from pre-court investigations, preparing comprehensive reports for court and other stakeholders.
  • Testify in court and participate in detention hearings as required.
  • Engage in staff meetings, training sessions, and educational workshops to enhance professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are related to the role.

Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor's Degree in behavioral sciences, sociology, criminal justice, or a related field recognized by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department is required. A minimum of one year of full-time experience in casework or counseling is preferred.

Special Requirements: A valid Texas Driver's License is mandatory, along with a personal vehicle that has liability insurance covering passengers.

Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency in verbal and written communication, typing, and computer skills is essential. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for effective collaboration with co-workers, juvenile offenders, their families, law enforcement, and community agencies. Leadership, problem-solving abilities, and counseling skills are also critical.

Work Environment:

The role involves a mix of office work and fieldwork, requiring the ability to adapt to various conditions. Employees may encounter adverse weather and safety hazards while performing field duties. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary to accommodate the needs of the position.

Physical Requirements:

The position includes both sedentary office tasks and active fieldwork, which may involve lifting and using tools for Community Service projects. Home visits and fieldwork necessitate driving and walking, with precautions taken to ensure safety.
