Position Summary:

The Speech Language Therapist is tasked with evaluating and treating patients referred for rehabilitation due to medical or surgical conditions necessitating recovery. This role involves providing services aimed at the prevention, identification, diagnosis, consultation, education, and rehabilitation of individuals with acquired communication and swallowing challenges. The therapist will collaborate closely with patients, their families, and a multidisciplinary team led by physicians to deliver tailored treatment plans. The primary objective is to enhance the patient's communicative, swallowing, or cognitive abilities, fostering their independence and rehabilitation potential. The therapist will design and implement a treatment program with specific goals aligned with the patient's capabilities and tolerance, under the guidance of the attending physician. Education for patients and families regarding effective speech therapy techniques is also a key responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducting initial and ongoing assessments of patients. Timely screening and evaluation are essential, with documentation of outcomes and data interpretation communicated to the physician and interdisciplinary team. Initiating a care plan with defined expected outcomes.
  • Planning, coordinating, and executing treatment plans as directed by the physician. Administering appropriate interventions, providing training and education to patients and their families, and documenting patient progress and discharge summaries.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of care interventions, documenting progress, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team and physician to refine the care plan. Continuous education for patients and families is vital.
  • Maintaining thorough documentation of assessments, treatment plans, and progress in the medical records, ensuring compliance with documentation standards.
  • Performing regular checks on patients and ensuring a safe and clean therapeutic environment.
  • Overseeing the daily activities of Speech Therapy Assistants and Rehabilitation Technicians.
  • Engaging in departmental and hospital-wide performance improvement initiatives, collecting and analyzing relevant data, and ensuring quality control of rehabilitation equipment.
  • Staying updated with current literature and methodologies relevant to the field, attending required meetings and training sessions.
Additional Duties:
  • Facilitating employee and patient education to enhance knowledge and skills for achieving quality outcomes.
  • Preparing and summarizing reports related to performance improvement activities.
  • Upholding the rights, dignity, and individuality of each patient in all interactions.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology is required.

Licensure/Certification:
Current Speech Language Pathology license in the state of practice, along with National ASHA certification and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association. Continuous maintenance of licensure and certifications is mandatory.

Experience:
A minimum of one year of experience in an inpatient rehabilitation setting with adult patients is required. Candidates should possess a professional demeanor, knowledge of regulatory standards, and the ability to apply professional practice standards effectively. Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills are essential, along with proficiency in relevant software applications.
