Nuclear Project Engineer / Project Manager, Irradiated Fuel Storage

This role entails overseeing project management for the design and development of Xe-100 irradiated fuel management and storage systems throughout all phases of the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Project (ARDP). Key responsibilities encompass planning, budgeting, scheduling, and executing small to medium-scale projects with budgets ranging from approximately $5 million to $25 million, aimed at supporting the achievement of larger project goals and high-level program deliverables. The position operates at both strategic and tactical levels to comprehend customer/client requirements, ensure compliance with contractual and technical specifications, and communicate project needs and responsibilities to both external subcontracted vendor organizations and internal teams. This includes leading the evaluation and resolution of implementation strategies, identifying process improvement opportunities, and managing the execution of tasks by external subcontracted teams and internal matrixed teams. The role collaborates with various departments, including project controls, engineering, licensing, supply chain, quality, safety, manufacturing, testing, operations, and construction functions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the creation of project baseline documentation, including project budget, schedule, execution plan, and deliverables; ensure alignment with business and corporate processes and policies.
  • Coordinate inputs and performance commitments from matrixed departments that support project execution, including Finance, Subcontracts/Procurement, Engineering, Licensing, and Quality/Safety.
  • Facilitate coordination across related projects where common customers, designs, or documentation exist.
  • Review and approve business analyses and make determinations regarding subcontracting decisions, engaging in negotiations as necessary.
  • Assess technical and programmatic approaches to ensure alignment with contract goals and requirements.
  • Manage the performance of subcontractors, partners, and internal staff through regular reports, status meetings, and documentation reviews.
  • Monitor project performance metrics, including risk management, scheduling, document management, and cost analysis.
  • Define and communicate deliverable acceptability through process control and performance documentation.
  • Support a culture of safety and ensure quality integration in all relevant processes.
  • Maintain professionalism in all forms of communication.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or a related field.
  • Typically, over ten years of experience as an engineer or engineering manager in the energy, nuclear, petrochemical, or high-technology sectors.
  • Experience in end-to-end complex system development, particularly in nuclear-safety systems and operations.
  • Proven experience as a technical lead or proposal manager.
  • Familiarity with nuclear regulatory codes or stringent QA programs.
  • Preferred experience in designing autonomous machines or remote-operated equipment.
  • Experience with irradiated nuclear fuel or high-level radioactive waste handling and storage is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of radiation shielding and criticality safety is preferred.
  • Experience with natural convection cooling systems is a plus.
