Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Health Nurse to join our team at UNC Health. As a School Health Nurse, you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive school health services to students in assigned Wayne County Public Schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate daily school health services to meet the mandates of the Public Schools of North Carolina.
  • Identify and coordinate health services for students with chronic or acute health needs, and develop emergency action plans as needed.
  • Assess students with acute or chronic health conditions and respond appropriately to potential school health emergency situations.
  • Lead communicable disease control and immunization compliance efforts in assigned schools.
  • Comply with state and local infection control and bloodborne pathogen policies, mandates, and guidelines.
  • Assist with control measures, such as exclusions and readmissions, when students or staff have communicable conditions or nuisance diseases.
  • Monitor and audit student immunization records, and provide reports to principals.
  • Eliminate or reduce health-related barriers to learning through screenings and health appraisals.
  • Coordinate and perform mass vision screenings for select grades and screenings for specific students who may be experiencing vision difficulty.
  • Make professional referrals and follow-up for students who do not pass screening.
  • Assist school support personnel with screenings by providing follow-up on referrals.
  • Evaluate students for health conditions that may interfere with learning, and make appropriate referrals and follow-up.
  • Act as a case manager for students with healthcare needs in the school setting.
  • Serve as a liaison between school, family, and physician to coordinate health services and implement health accommodation plans at school.
  • Participate on school-based intervention teams when health issues are involved.
  • Provide required medication and invasive procedure training and follow-up audits for school personnel when students have special health care needs.
  • Utilize professional nursing documentation standards to record nursing activities and all school health encounters.
  • Transfer appropriate information to the students' cumulative school health records, complying with FERPA regulations.
  • Follow school board policy regarding record retention and disposition.
  • Ensure an effective and efficient work environment by keeping the Manager, School Health Services informed of activities, any difficulties, and status in meeting established deadlines for reports and projects.
  • Develop, implement, and present school and community-related health education programs for specific health conditions, wellness, and disease prevention in assigned schools based on identified needs or conditions.
  • Act as a role model and enthusiastically support the Corporate and School Health Services department.
  • Keep current in trends and best practices in School Health Nursing.
  • Complete continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements as applicable.
  • Apply knowledge of principles of universal precautions, and routinely use personal protective equipment and infection control barriers or devices to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is preferred.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina is required.
  • Current National School Nurse Certification or attainment within 3 years is required.
  • Previous School Health/Public Health (Child Health Program) experience is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years nursing experience is required, preferably in Pediatric/Adolescent Nursing.
  • Case management experience is helpful.
  • Considerable knowledge of school health nursing practices and professional standards is required.
  • Ability to provide health education programs to diverse audiences is required.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities is required.
  • Excellent decision-making and case management skills are required.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with teammates, administrators, school-based intervention teams, other healthcare providers, and service agencies is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multi-age students, parents, school personnel, and healthcare professionals is required.
  • Ability to provide own transportation to various work locations, including occasional home visits, is required.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English is required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and ability to learn new software rapidly is required.
Valid NC Driver's License

No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
