Job Title: Cardiac Catheterization Specialist

Job Summary:

The Cardiac Catheterization Specialist performs a variety of technical procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, requiring some independent judgment and initiative. The Specialist assumes responsibility for designated areas and procedures, working closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participates in procedure room preparation and post-procedure turn-around.
  • Develops specific knowledge of invasive, diagnostic, and interventional supplies, indications, and applications.
  • Makes hemodynamic recordings, calculations, and interpretations.
  • Provides emotional support for patients and their family members.
  • Assists in inventory control and fosters teamwork and cohesiveness with team members and physicians.
  • Provides patient education and ensures patient comfort.
  • Assesses patient condition, documents it, and informs physicians of deviations from normal criteria throughout the procedure.
  • Develops knowledge specific to cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, pharmacology, anatomic anomalies, and treatment options.
  • Understands and applies principles of x-ray generation and safety, and operates imaging equipment correctly.
  • Provides procedural assistance as a circulating tech, scrub tech, or monitoring tech, according to cath lab policies and procedures.
  • Mixes and administers medications under physician direction and supervision.
  • Performs point-of-care testing and QA.
  • Documents procedures and associated events thoroughly and accurately.

Requirements:

  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • ACLS or PALS certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in health science with six months of healthcare experience, or graduate of a Radiologic Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, Respiratory Therapy, or Nursing program, or graduate of a diploma or associate program in health science with one year of healthcare experience.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Current license, where applicable, Registered Respiratory Therapist program, 2 years of CV Invasive Training experience, RN degree.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.

Advanced Electrophysiology:

  • Fulfills role of first assist and scrubs a minimum of 50 Electrophysiology and device procedures per year.
  • Demonstrates excellence with respect to suture device pockets, measure baseline intervals, establish capture thresholds, perform diagnostic EP study identifying AV block, VA Block, AERP, VERP, AVNERP, Fast pathway ERP, Slow pathway ERP, PVC on HIS, etc.
  • Arrhythmia induction protocols, basic 3D mapping: Non timing cases (A fib Ablation, AVNRT).
