Key Responsibilities:

The Autopsy Assistant is responsible for weighing specimens in accordance with established protocols and accurately documenting weights. Specimens must be placed in fixative within appropriately labeled containers for future analysis.

This role involves transporting tissues to the designated cutting area for processing by residents.

The Autopsy Assistant will utilize aseptic techniques to collect cultures from organs as necessary and deliver them to the laboratory for examination.

It is essential for the Autopsy Assistant to ensure that the body is cleaned and prepared for release in a condition suitable for an open-casket service, avoiding any visible disfigurement.

Additionally, the Autopsy Assistant will prepare the body for collection by funeral services and coordinate special studies as required.

Preparation of the workspace is crucial; the Autopsy Assistant must set out the necessary tools for the autopsy procedure and position the body accordingly.

Maintaining cleanliness in the morgue and laboratory areas is a vital duty, which includes sharpening and sanitizing instruments and replenishing supplies.

All specimens must be disposed of properly, with hazardous waste managed according to regulations, and materials packed for shipment to external laboratories.

The Autopsy Assistant will receive human remains for storage, verify identities, and assist in the release of bodies to morticians and other authorized personnel.


Qualifications & Education:
A bachelor's degree in laboratory science technology, biology, or chemistry is required.
All licenses must be fully valid and unrestricted.

The Autopsy Assistant should be prepared to provide documentation upon request to confirm current competencies, skills, certifications, and/or licenses related to the services performed.

Evidence of educational and training experiences, including any gaps in history, must be verifiable.

A comprehensive understanding of chemical safety and biosafety principles is essential.


Health Requirements:
Proof of the following tests is necessary:
- Tuberculosis testing.
- Rubella testing.
- Compliance with OSHA regulations regarding occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Work Schedule:
Standard hours are from 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
