Job Summary:

The Infection Prevention Specialist will be responsible for performing infection prevention and control related activities within the hospital. This includes supporting management in implementing patient safety initiatives, performing hospital infection surveillance and risk assessment activities, and participating in infection prevention orientation and regular in-services for hospital staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Perform hospital infection surveillance and risk assessment activities in accordance with internal and external guidelines, analyzing and interpreting data to determine infection risks to patients, staff, and community.
  2. Investigate epidemiologically important infections, clusters, and exposures to identify sources, and report findings to management and perform interventions as directed.
  3. Participate in infection prevention orientation and regular in-services to hospital staff, addressing standards of care, infection risks, evidence-based practices, sterilization, high/low level disinfection, hand hygiene, instrument and equipment storage, etc.
  4. Partner with multidiscipline team members within the hospital to optimize patient care and maintain/increase compliance with infection prevention and control practices.
  5. Proactively identify and eliminate infectious risks throughout the hospital, facilitating activities that support hospital compliance with government and agency regulations.
  6. Assist management in preparation for external regulatory reviews to maintain related accreditation(s).
  7. Document infection prevention related activities and create conventional and computer-aided records and information.
Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Public Health, Nursing or related field, required. Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, preferred. Current certification by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC), preferred.
