Job Description / Essential ElementsBrief Description of Position

The Speech Therapist will provide language, speech, and hearing therapy to pupils in assigned schools who have not acquired the necessary communication skills for their age and/or ability.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • To help pupils with language, speech, and hearing disorders to communicate more effectively.
  • To help identified individuals overcome articulation problems.
  • To help identified individuals develop oral language capabilities, including syntax and vocabulary.
  • To help identified individuals improve their voice quality.
  • To help identified individuals overcome disorders of fluency.
Other Duties
  • To identify pupils with speech and language problems through screening and referral.
  • To assess pupil's speech-related needs.
  • To select a case load.
  • To develop an individualized program based on identification, assessment, remediation, and evaluation of speech, language, and hearing needs of pupils and to communicate those needs to parents, school personnel, and community.
  • To identify children for speech, language, and hearing problems by survey and encouraging referral.
  • To annually reassess pupils previously identified as having speech and language problems.
  • To develop an individualized program based upon identification, assessment, and remediation needs of each child.
  • To provide services to students identified.
  • To remediate all areas of speech, language, and hearing handicaps through scheduling of individual and/or group therapy sessions, conferencing, and coordination of services.
  • To evaluate the child and his (therapist) services.
  • To modify the program to provide improved service.
  • To develop a system for record keeping.
  • To refer pupils, when indicated, to nurses, psychologists, and others for further evaluations related to their speech, language, and hearing problems.
  • To confer with parents and school personnel concerning pupils with speech, language, and hearing problems.
  • To provide regular reports to parents, teachers, and coordinator administrators on the progress of pupils receiving therapy or on waiting lists.
  • To interpret the services offered by the Speech and Hearing Department and the other County Office Programs.
  • To attend meetings of staff, parents, teachers, and others relating to the program and County Office.
  • To carry out other assignments that may be delegated by the County Superintendent or coordinator.
