POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the general oversight of the Charge Nurse, the Staff Registered Nurse employs professional nursing expertise through the nursing process to deliver patient care.

This includes assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for designated patients. Acts as an advocate for patients within the healthcare framework. Responsible for executing patient care that necessitates specialized training and proficiency. Continuously acquires and maintains the knowledge and skills required for delivering care in a specialized service area. Ensures the safety, comfort, care, and treatment of patients in accordance with legal, ethical, professional, and institutional standards. Engages in the hospital's Quality Improvement and Service Excellence initiatives. Demonstrates comprehension of the philosophy and objectives, adhering to the policies and procedures of the department and organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment:

Conducts a continuous and systematic collection of data, guided by knowledge of physiological and psychological principles and experience, using this data to establish nursing diagnoses and predict outcomes.


Nursing Diagnosis and Outcome Identification:
Coordinates and analyzes assessment data to determine diagnoses and sets patient goals based on these diagnoses.

Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to plan the delivery of nursing care and administers appropriate clinical decisions in patient care.

Works with the entire healthcare team to formulate a care plan that prescribes interventions to achieve expected outcomes.
Delivers appropriate care to patients competently, based on the needs of the patient and the population served. Implements the interventions outlined in the Plan of Care.
Evaluates the patient's progress towards achieving outcomes. Communicates effectively with physicians and other team members.
Provides education to patients and families based on individual needs and devises strategies to meet those needs.
Administers and reconciles medications accurately.
Follows infection prevention protocols.
Demonstrates an understanding of patient rights, including confidentiality, informed consent, and privacy.
Exhibits adaptability, problem-solving skills, and professionalism at all times.
Participates in a systematic, interdisciplinary, and ongoing evaluation of programs, process improvements, and desired client-centered outcomes.

Encourages personal professional growth and development by fulfilling requirements for mandatory/continuing education and competence validation; supports department-based goals that contribute to the organization's success; serves as a preceptor, mentor, and resource for less experienced staff.

Actively engages in survey readiness activities and ensures departmental compliance with all regulatory standards.

Maintains patient confidentiality and handles PHI appropriately.

INTERACTIONS AND COLLABORATION

All positions at Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, participating in the care and service delivery process through effective collaboration with other team members.

Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors. Supervises LVNs, Techs, Scribes, Unit Clerks, and other non-licensed personnel. Reports to the Charge Nurse, Physician or Extender, Director of Emergency.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.

Experience:
No prior experience required; one year of Med/Surg experience preferred.

Licensure/Certification:
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas, or immediately eligible. Basic Life Support certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support required prior to working first shift in the Emergency Department. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (or ENPC) certifications required within 6 months of employment. TNCC required within 18 months of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent:
standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling & reaching.

Occasional:
sitting, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, & twisting.

Visual and hearing acuity required; Color vision necessary for perceiving changes in patients' skin color and colors of medications and solutions.

Work is primarily indoors, with adequate ventilation and a comfortable temperature.

Possible exposure to:
toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, radiant energy, communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens.
