Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist position at UofL Health performs a wide range of technical procedures analyzing blood and various other body fluids to support physician diagnosis and treatment. The MLS must comply with standards and accrediting bodies, including AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and Joint Commission.

Responsibilities

  1. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, acceptability, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results according to departmental SOPs.
  2. Report STATS or critical results to providers according to departmental procedures.
  3. Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  4. Document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from laboratory performance specifications.
  5. Adhere to laboratory quality control policies, document quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  6. Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  7. Follow accrediting agency standards CAP, AABB, FDA, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission, and safety guidelines.
  8. Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  9. Participate in safety training sessions, know safety manual locations, and safety equipment usage.
  10. Complete department-specific competencies.
  11. Identify and report safety hazards or concerns.
  12. Make suggestions for policy and procedure improvements.
  13. Perform teaching and training duties to other staff and potential employees.
  14. Develop and assist in writing training guides and standard work documents.
  15. Maintain compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
  16. Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  1. Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.

Certification:

  1. Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by one of the following accrediting agencies is required.
  2. Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  3. Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  4. Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  5. Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  6. Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the Department of Health, Education & Welfare/US Department of Health & Human Services (HEW/HHS)
  7. Technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in one of the following areas:
  8. Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Cytology
  9. Technologist certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) in one of the following areas:
  10. Medical Technologist, Andrology Laboratory Scientist, Embryology Laboratory Scientist, or Molecular Diagnostics Technologist
  11. Beginning in January 2004, newly certified individuals must participate in The American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry (BOR) Certification Maintenance Program.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Minimum one (1) year of lab experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.
